Controversy over the “Morning after Pill”
The controversy is still brewing over the approval of the so called "Morning after Pill" for sale over the counter nationwide. In Kern County, there are some people who say they just won't use the pill.

The Food and Drug Administration's approval of Plan B requires it be provided to anyone over the age of 18, but for some that's crossing a line they don't support. However, for some pharmacy employees across the nation, it could create a moral and/or religious dilemma for them.

In Bakersfield, at least one employee at a pharmacy on Bernard Street doesn't feel comfortable selling the pill. But, the store owner said it's not a problem. Advocates of the pill say what is a problem is an unintended teen pregnancy rate in Kern County that ranks third in the country.

"If you look at societal costs just for unwanted pregnancies in this county alone, we're talking millions of dollars and where else could we better spend those funds," said Kellea Turley, Nurse Practitioner with Planned Parenthood.

Opponents of making the drug more readily available equate it to taking a life. Some say it's like promoting promiscuity, similar arguments to those made against other forms of contraceptive.

Lee's Pharmacy in downtown Bakersfield doesn't stock the pill, but employees say their not opposed to providing it.

"It can be a medical necessity and that's what we're here for to help the patients," said Jesse Trevino, Pharmacy Technician at Lee's Pharmacy.

The new law is expected to take effect in the next few months.

California is one of 9 states that previously provided the pill with a certified pharmacist's approval or a doctor's prescription. Those things won't be necessary now for those over the age of 18.
