That new Medicare prescription drug plan appears to have an unexpected downside that's costing taxpayers money.
The downside: Prescription drug prices are soaring.
The AARP reports today that brand name drug prices rose 4 percent during the first 3 months this year...which translates to a 16 percent annual price increase. It's the biggest price hike in 5 years.
The sharpest increase: Ambien, the popular sleep aid. Its price is up 13 percent this year, on top of 20 percent last year, according to AARP.
